Star Trek Discovery image.jpg

First hearing about this show I was excited that it was taking place 10 years before the Original Series. Then I heard of all behind the scenes news that went on and delays. Also that they said they would be taking a page from ”Game of Thrones” where the main characters would be killed off. They were even going to get Michael Dorn for a cameo but he was given a small paycheck. And to top it all off they were going to break one of Gene Roddenberry’s rules about Star Trek, that it shouldn’t get political, even though Deep Space Nine did that. The show was also rated TV-MA but they said “just hardcore PG-13″ but one episode didn’t look like it.

The first episode of this show was on tv but it felt dark and unpleasant. The creators said that there’s a light at the end of the tunnel but it felt like it was trying to be something it clearly wasn’t. I binged the rest of the first season since I didn’t want to pay for CBS All Access every month is all. The last half started to feel more like the Star Trek we knew growing up and at the end of the last episode in the first season made me smile. Also, I hope if some of the characters die in style and dignity and don’t end up getting their heads cut off like in Game of Thrones.

Heard also it will be renewed for a few more seasons and people are going back to watching Star Trek: Enterprise since THAT was trying to be a prequel to the original series at times. It’s a good show so far and I heard the next seasons will be more Star Trek, all I had to say when I heard that is, THANK GOD! Since Star Trek Discovery felt like the J.J. Abrams reboot movies and those get attacked for being more Star Wars than Star Trek.

I remember watching this on Cartoon Network’s Toonami action block I think when I was about 10 or 11. Watching it now I’m surprised at all the stuff that was cut from the show back then. Even saw Sage Bennett review this as a middle ground future, not too dark like in Alien, but not too bright like Star Trek. That’s what the future will probably be now and then, something in the middle.

The story is about Jean Starwind and his partner Jim Hawking as they go on this adventure after helping someone. Even meet some new crewmembers as well. The plot is kind of like that of Joss Weadon’s Firefly and that show was like the Wild West in Space. Firefly was also on FOX so long ago and sadly got canceled probably because of a bad air date or that the show needed extra help. Looking at FOX now it could have saved the channel from all the bad sitcoms and unethical reality tv they have now.

Anyway, this show is pretty good and it isn’t exactly like Cowboy Bebop, then again Cowboy Bebop kinda spoiled us a bit after it aired. It’s also amazing how adult it is now that is uncut and on Funimation Now.

5 year mission, Chris Pine, Edris Elba, movie, reboot, sci-fi, Star Trek, Star Trek: Enterprise

First watching this movie I had mixed feelings since it seemed like these Star Trek 2009 reboot movies at times didn’t feel like Star Trek movies. More like action movies and that’s not what Star Trek is about, it’s about diplomacy. There ARE a lot of homages to the original Star Trek in this movie though.

The movie starts off 3 years into the 5 year mission with Kirk thinking about leaving the Enterprise. Spock is also thinking of leaving as well as something happens to someone close to him. Then a damaged ship seeks help from the Enterprise and we later see our enemy Thrall, played by Idris Elba. Who want’s to destroy this space station in the frontier.

I won’t spoil his origin but it woke me up and made me want to watch the ending. The middle and ending of this movie also feels a bit like an homage to Star Trek: Enterprise and you don’t get many mentions about that show in Star Trek.

In the end the movie was trying to make it feel like a Star Trek movie and it kinda did that at least for the ending. If your still a fan of Star Trek and their movies then give this a watch.

Watching this I was excited after the 2009 reboot and that Benedict Cumberbatch was in this since he was so good in Sherlock. He’s good in this too as well as all the other enterprise crew make an appearance. There’s also this random scene of some girl in her underwear as just a way to have sex appeal, maybe. As this movie went on though around the middle it felt like a remake of Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan.
There’s going to be another movie I think this year called Star Trek: Beyond maybe involving the five year mission and maybe the Dominion. There is a graphic novel series of how this five year mission and how it goes in the reboot timeline. There’s also some trailers for it and some Star Trek fans think it might involve the Dominion since one alien looks like a Jem’hadar. If you don’t know what that is check Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and it explains the Dominion  and the Jem’hadar. Even though I heard they won’t recycle any Star Trek villains in Star Trek: Beyond. Overall this movie is okay and still feels like a retread of The Wrath of Khan and J.J. Abrams is still pretty good director. Watch it if your still a Star Trek fan or a Benedict Cumberbatch fan too.

Deep Space Nine, Janeway, Kes, Maquis, Neelix, Netfilx, sci-fi, Seven of Nine, Star Trek, Star Trek: Voyager, Starfleet

Saw this also on Spike TV back in 2005 and it seemed okay. Now watching it on Netflix you can understand it a bit better. Something about a Starfleet ship near DS9 called the Voyager to stop the Maquis, a rebel faction stopping the Cardassians in this demilitarized zone of space. More is explained about them in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine too in case you don’t know about them.

The Voyager crew then gets flung in the delta quadrant as well as some Maquis people too. Basically taking about a 75 year journey to home and the Maquis people unite with the Voyager crew. Along the way the encounter a guy Neelix and a woman Kes, both native to the delta quadrant. Neelix informs the Voyager crew in the in the delta quadrent of some of the basic stuff. While Kes learns about medicine and how to use her telepathy powers.

There’s also captain Janeway played by Kate Mulgrew who started out on soap opera before this. There’s also a holo Doctor, and many other people too like Seven of Nine later in the series. Still trying to watch this entire series on Netflix start to finish but some people say it was okay and that seems kinda true.

Still if you want to see this be my guest but be warned it’s not going to be like the Battlestar Galatica remake if your thinking that. It was also great seeing Kate Mulgrew before Orange is the New Black as well.

100 years, Brent Spiner, cbs, Enterprise, Klingons, mirror universe, prequel, sci-fi, Scott Bakula, Star Trek, upn, Xindi

I remember watching this on UPN when it can out even though it says it was on CBS. This show is basically a prequel to the original Star Trek taking place 100 years before the original series. It stars Quantum Leap guy Scott Bakula leading a team to explore new worlds, It’s basically space exploration in it’s infancy.

I heard the first two seasons lacked genuine humanity and it was just a bunch of people messing around space. At least that’s what Linkara said when he did his top 15 Star Trek episodes and it seems quite true at times. Wasn’t until the third season where they fought the Xindi, people started watching again.

The forth season we got to see Brent Spiner as an earlier Dr. Soong getting inspiration for robotics. Also how the Klingon’s lost their forehead bumps in the original series. There’s also a mirror universe arc which explains where the ship, the Defiant, in the original Star Treks’s episode, The Tholian Web, went.

Also some think the second to last episode Terra Prime, was the true ending since the actual ending was a “kick in the balls”. At least that’s what Linkara said and after seeing it doesn’t seem to be that much of it. Anyway it was great seeing humans trying to unite other aliens and trying to create the United Federation of Planets. You can see this on Amazon Prime Video, Hulu Plus, and Netflix if you want to give it a watch if you want too.

First remember watching this on Spike TV back in 2005. It’s mostly a spin off of Star Trek: The Next Generation where Federation captain Benjamin Cisco takes over an old mining station formally owned by the Cardassins. There he tires to make peace with both the Cardassins and the Bjorn. As well as a new threat to the Federation called the Dominion.
There’s also a shape shifter Odo and they guy who plays him is real good. It got better when Worf was added to the cast and the uniforms changed, the uniforms made me think of Star Trek: First Contact.
There’s also some instances where the some of the cast goes to the mirror universe even. Also when Odo meets his people and then finds the shocking truth about them is a bit surprising.
Anyway this show is on Netflix and Amazon Prime and it might not be as good as the Original Star Trek and the Next Generation it’s good in it’s own rights. Even got a couple of emmy’s when it came out as well.

Andromenda, BBC America, cameos, Canadian, classic. Spike, dvds, Earth: Final Conflict, Gene Roddenberry, guest stars, hd, High Definition, Hulu, Netflix, sci-fi, space opera, spin-offs, Star Trek, Star Trek: The Next Generation, tv

Remember this also when seeing it as a baby. Didn’t really get into it until it was on Spike as a part of some mini marathon back in 2005 or something like that. Now with the thanks of Netflix I can watch all of Star Trek: The Next Generation from start to finish. After seeing the Original Star Trek I can see they got a bigger budget as well as bigger stories and actors.

First episode arc was good but the end of season 1 with Tasha seemed like a bit of a cop out. Also like all the cameos from celebrities and from the Original Star Trek. Also heard Wesly Crusher was kind of annoying but they gave him a good send off and not a lame cop out, from what I’ve heard. Also the end of the series episode was pretty good and explained the entire series meaning of it all.

This review might be short since I’m still on season 2 on Netflix but I’ve seen some of the other episode ahead from Spike and BBC America. This is a classic in television and it was kind of sad when Gene Roddenberry died since he had other side projects. Like Earth: Final Conflict, and Andromeda, which I think were Canadian productions so Gene Roddenberry might be Canadian.

Anyway you can see this on Netflix, Hulu, TV, and even get the DVD’s but they’re pretty expensive. Also this show was given a slight update and given the High Definition treatment. So newcomers will feel right at home with the effects. There’s also some spin offs that expand the Next Generation universe Star Trek: Deep Space 9 and Star Trek: Voyager. I’m sure Star Trek: Enterprise doesn’t count since it’s a prequel and I’ll get to those shows eventually one day. Another classic Sci-Fi show that also a space opera at times.

Star Trek art
Never really watched the original Star Trek as a kid. Thought it was kind of only for nerds was actually pretty good and I saw a few episodes growing up. Was until I had Netflix I started to watch them in order and what I notice about the original Star Trek is that the stories can like last forever. The gene Roddenberry new life these stories would last the test of time. I was also surprised that William Shatner is Canadian and I really didn’t know that. Gene Roddenberry also did some other shows like the Andromeda and earth final conflict those were supported by Canadian channels. they were pretty good but I have to watch them again sometime later in life. Since I heard that you enjoy the Andromeda was good but I just feel like the effects got budgeted or something or just got worse. anyway I’m off topic but I have to review those shows too someday. Star Trek is a space opera, a Sci-fi classic, it also has a lot of pop art in it too. If you don’t know what pop art is imagine an inside of a skittles bag all over the set. Seeing it in HD makes the pop art even bolder and vibrant. Some of the characters are pretty amazing too as well as the ideas it was also nominated for a bunch of Oscars but never got them. They even made this into a cartoon in the 1970’s but haven’t seen that yet and maybe soon I will.

J.J. Abrams, Kirk, original Star Trek crew, other Star Trek shows, reboot, Spock, Star Trek, Star Wars, timeline

Star Trek reboot art
First seeing this I thought it would just be a retread of Kirk and Spock growing up. Then about halfway thought the movie it really starts to change and really becomes a reboot. Overall J.J. Abrams did a good job with this Stark Trek movie and Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto as Kirk and Spock are good.

Some people attacked this for having a lot of it borrowed from Star Wars. Like the bar scene and the ice planet but it’s pretty good on it’s own. The cast does a pretty good job as the original Star Trek crew. A The twist and the middle is pretty good for Star Trek and people who watched the other Star Trek movies will go “That didn’t happen!”.

Even though they try to explain it and not ruin the original shows. This way J.J. Abrams can do his own thing with Star Trek without destroying the timeline and the other Star Trek shows people loved. I’m trying not to divulge too much because it’s that good of a movie and I hope people get a chance to see it. This is pretty good for a movie and reboot and the sequel I’ll do some other day as well.
